The Amazon group is being summoned again by the courts to limit its deliveries of products to essential products and is therefore facing a substantial fine. Following this event, the American giant closed its French sites for an initial period of 5 days from Thursday in order to clean its warehouses and assess the risks linked to the coronavirus.

It is following a decision of the court of Nanterre on Tuesday that Amazon must react. This court has indeed established that Amazon has disregarded its obligation of safety and health prevention of its employees. It thus ordered the American giant to carry out a risk assessment with employee representatives and to limit its deliveries during this period to only first-quality products.in addition, the company must limit its deliveries during this period to only first necessity products such as food, hygiene and medical products, under penalty of having to pay a fine of one million euros for each day of delay and for each infraction noted.
Although the group says it is surprised by this decision and considers that it has already put in place strict security measures, it has appealed but has also taken the decision to close its French warehouses while waiting while maintaining 100% remuneration for its employees.
Amazon explains, however, that it is impossible for it to limit its deliveries to essential products within 24 hours without running the risk of accidentally delivering a non-essential product and thus finding itself obliged to pay the fine. It therefore prefers, in case of doubt, to simply close its sites.
Of course and following this court decision, the Amazon group has made known its dissatisfaction by explaining that this forced closure of its warehouses would not be without consequences both for its employees, its customers or for French VSEs and SMEs that use this platform to develop.
But it is clear that the king of online sales is already targeted, since the beginning of the containment, by the unions, who denounce the processing of orders for non-essential products such as culture products or beauty products. On March 21, Amazon announced that, in response to these accusations, it would stop taking orders deemed to be of lower priority on its French sites.the company had announced that it was no longer taking orders that were deemed to be of lower priority on its French and Italian sites, without mentioning the notion of "essential products", which we discussed earlier and which fall under the heading of "basic necessities". These products are in fact a minority in the group's activity.
Let us also recall that 5 formal notices were made to Amazon by the Labour Inspectorate and 3 of them were finally lifted. Amazon always defends itself by certifying that it has provided its personnel with suitable protective equipment.
